about

This record of Sine Seawave, a post-progressive collective from Tomsk, is the second part of the soundtrack for the dance performance of Ksenia Belenkova “You Can Do It” which was shown for the first time in 2014. Both parts of the soundtrack form a dilogy “Incidentals Vol. 1”, but each of them can be listened to as a separate piece. However, if the first part (“Aspirations”) was “heavenly” and affirmative, the second one represents hell and “no”: shackled movements, you can’t do it.

Instead of voices of the unknown creatures of paradise now there are voices of mechanisms – devoid of any function or “sense”, harsh, shrilling out their shortage, discording with each other and with themselves. Now it sounds more like industrial music – there’s a great deal of monotonous pulsating bass, percussion and abstract electronic noises. And for this time this is not a single ambient episode lasting indefinitely but several heterogenous parts making up a definite sequence resembling a parabola: a dive into emptiness, to the bottom of depressive dispersion (“Movement in Space”), framed by pieces of manic density (“No You Can’t Do It”). The “animal” sound of the saxophone of Vladimir Luchansky appearing on those pieces adds intensity to the sonic vivisection. However, “The Final Theme” refers again to paradise, to the indefiniteness of its soar left somewhere in the past.

In the second part of the “hellish” suite (“No You Can’t Do It”), accompanied by monotonous depressing bass, the speechless sound texture is suddenly torn by voice samples that this time refer to the extra-musical plot of the performance and, to some extent, put everything in its place – put it down, to the ground. This plot is a personal trauma of sterility set against the common bio-political background. Bio-political declarations of actual power coming together with a renaissance of obscurantism and clericalism, its seeming concern for the population, for the growth of breed of consumers, taxpayers and soldiers – all this leads only to the marginalization of a sterile woman. This is brought to evidence by sampled fragments of the discourse of power used in this record: phrases of politicians, medics, voices of “the people” (“I propose to introduce execution for childlessness”). Nonetheless, the bio-political façade hides the unsightly reverse that appears to be its “truth”. “You can do it” being officially declared means rather something exactly opposite. Sterility, impotence to conceive turns out to be an attribute of the bio-political regime itself that succeeds only in controlling life which is finally buried in asphalt. Bio-politics turns out to be tanato-politics.

That is the hell that tells us “you can do it” on every corner. In every corner of the room that we cannot escape. Hell is what we all know.

==============================

(No You Can’t Do It).

(No You Can’t Do It)
